Kia Kanuta is a celebrated chef on a mission to introduce Hāngī to the world. Fresh from sharing this traditional Māori cooking method in Bali, he is passionate about bringing traditional Māori flavours to global audiences. Recently named Auckland’s Outstanding Chef for 2024, Kia’s culinary journey has taken him through some of New Zealand’s top restaurants, including Prego, Café Hanoi, Mudbrick, Ada and Pici. Beyond his travels, Kia works closely with restaurants, helping develop menus and incorporating Māori cuisine into modern dining. As a father of two and a dedicated community advocate, his passion goes beyond the plate - he believes in the power of food to connect, heal, and bring people together. “The kitchen saved my life in so many ways. Feeding people is my love language, and the sense of belonging is what kept me there,” he says.
